Divots are often created by the club making a good contact with a ball, not the ground, one expert has reminded golfers.
Australian golf guru Paul Smith, who is currently promoting his 'The Golfing Machine' swing method in the UK, has said that big divots create by the top stars should not encourage players to start hitting under the ball too much.
Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, Smith commented: "Many players do not understand why they take a divot or don't even take a divot at all because in their swing they are trying to scoop the ball up into the air.
"If you look at someone like South African Ernie Els, who takes a big divot, its because he is making contact with the ball first and then the ground."
Smith's Golfing Machine swing method focuses on maintaining some basic alignments to perfect the body mechanics associated with long, clean hitting.
