Glover showed maturity with six-iron tee choice at US Open

25/06/2009
Lucas Glover showed how much he had matured as a golfer by taking a six-iron from the tee of the final hole at the US Open.

Glover held a two-stroke into the 72nd hole of the tournament and plumped for the middle-iron on the 364-yard par 4, rather than using his golf driver and trying to get as close to the green as possible.

This decision proved a wiser choice than that of Jean Van de Velde at the 1999 British Open when he reached for a driver on the final hole, found the rough, walked off the green with a triple bogey and then lost in a play-off to Paul Lawrie.

According to USA Today, Glover said: "We decided to play the hole the way we've been playing it and that was from about 160 [yards] to the middle of the green.

"You couldn't ask for too much else."

Meanwhile, Glover's win meant that world number one Tiger Woods was prevented from making history by being the first man to successfully defend all four golf majors.
