Miguel Angel Jimenez held on to win the Omega European Masters at the 22nd attempt yesterday (Sunday, September 5th).
The Spaniard, who has played in the Swiss event in every year he has been a European Tour professional, built up a seemingly-unassailable lead of six shots with seven holes to play over Italian rival Edoardo Molinari.
However, a jittery back nine and a stunning surge from Molinari almost saw the world number 38's lead wiped out, before an untimely bogey at the 16th hole from the Italian effectively ended his hopes.
The 14th hole proved Jimenez's biggest challenge as he drove his
Srixon Z Star golf ball into the bunker, went over the back of the green with his third shot and then missed a putt for par.
"That was a lot of misses and Edoardo hit two superb shots to two feet at the [14th and] 15th where I struggled just to make par," Jimenez said.
"But it feels good to win after so many visits to these mountains where not only had I finished second twice but also been in contention many times. So I really wanted to come here and win this tournament."
Meanwhile, Italian teenager Matteo Manassero secured his European Tour card for 2011 with a third-place finish.
