Johnson stays smart to lead Northern Trust Open

05/02/2010
Dustin Johnson insists that players need to ensure they use their brain if they are to challenge at the head of the leaderboard in the Northern Trust Open.

The TaylorMade golf clubs user produced an almost perfect opening round at the Riviera Country Club to hold a one-stroke lead over Anders Romero and Kevin Stadler.

Johnson's bogey-free, seven-under-par round of 64 was summed up by the holing of a 65-foot shot with his golf putter for birdie on the 12th.

However, he feels that key to his success was strategically positioning his golf ball on the course to give himself the best chance of picking up shots.

Johnson said: "You've got to hit every club in your bag and you've got to be smart coming into the greens just because you want to hit yourself on the right side of the hole.

"I got off to a good start, had good vibes going all day and just hit the ball really good all day long."

The 25-year-old is a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, with the most recent of these coming at the weather-shortened AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am last year when beating Mike Weir by four shots.
