Mahan out of luck at US Open

25/06/2009
- Golf Equipment
Hunter Mahan witnessed proof at the US Open that luck is needed as well as opting for the right golf club and performing the correct golf swing to succeed in tournaments.

With three holes to play at the major, the American was within one shot of the lead and had found the perfect lie on the fairway at the 70th hole.

However, despite getting a great connection, Mahan was left in an awkward position after striking the pin and rebounding off the green, which caused him to bogey the hole.

He said: "We had a good number. I think it was like 172. I had an eight-iron downwind and just flushed it.

"I hit that thing pretty hard and it ricocheted off the green. That happens. It's a US Open. You're going to get stuff like that. The green is just fast."

Overall, Mahan ended up sealing his third straight top 20 finish in the US Open, which added to the share of tenth spot he achieved behind Angel Cabrera at the Masters in April.

Mahan will now turn his attention to the Travelers Championship, where he will be looking to build on a record of not finishing out of the top two at the event for the past three years.
