McIlroy expecting greater focus away from Westwood

Rory McIlroy is looking forward to dedicating more of a focus on his own game during the second round of the Dubai World Championship.

The Titleist 909D2 golf driver user grinded out a four-under-par 68 over the opening 18 holes to sit three shots off the pace set by Robert Allenby in the season-ending event.

McIlroy played alongside his nearest pursuer in the Race to Dubai standings, Lee Westwood, in this round and found himself getting caught up in a personal head-to head duel.

However, with Westwood, who uses Ping golf equipment, registering a 66, the pair will have different playing partners on day two.

The 20-year-old said: "Lee's been around a lot longer than me. You want to try to concentrate on the tournament, but at the same time you're seeing what he's doing.

"It will be nice not to play with him [in the second round], just to concentrate fully on my own score and on my own game. I think it will be good for both of us not to play together."

McIlroy, who also plays with Titleist Pro V1x golf balls and a Titleist Vokey golf wedge, brought a €128,172 lead over Westwood in the Race to Dubai standings into the tournament.

However, with the winner of the Dubai World Championship set to earn €830,675, McIlroy needs to stick close to Westwood and other challengers Martin Kaymer and Ross Fisher to finish at the head of the European Tour money list for the first time.
