Ping waive rights for controversial golf wedges and irons

A conclusion has finally been reached in relation to the use of certain pieces of Ping golf equipment that have caused controversy in professional golf since the turn of the year.
New groove regulations were implemented on the PGA Tour from January 1st, with the aim of making it tougher for players to impart spin on their golf balls with their golf wedges and golf irons.
U-shaped grooves were banned as part of this rule change, but a loophole meant that Ping golf wedges and irons made before 1990 were exempt, with the Ping Eye 2 wedge being used by players including Phil Mickelson and John Daly.
This has led to complaints from a number of other stars, but the manufacturer has now decided to waive its rights "in the interests of golf" from March 29th.
Ping chairman and chief executive John Solheim said: "Just giving this waiver means a lot to us. It takes a big load off our shoulders, but more, it takes a load off the game, especially the PGA Tour.
"We want fair competition throughout golf. It's so important."
Lee Westwood, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Angel Cabrera are among the golf stars to use Ping golf equipment.
