Punch shot requires golfers to slightly change their set up

18/02/2010
- Golf Equipment
Having the capability of being versatile on the golf course and being able to perform a number of different shots could prove highly beneficial and advice has been offered on a stroke that may be productive in windy conditions.

Many players have learned the art of drawing or fading a golf ball to avoid hazards and locate a better position on the fairway and now Golf Monthly has provided guidance on the punch shot.

Writing for the publication, John Jacobs speaks of how minor adjustments to a player's set up can ensure that they will achieve a lower, more penetrating ball flight to avoid getting caught in heavier winds.

He said: "Narrow your stance and move the ball back from centre. Notice how this de-lofts the club you are using so there is no need to close the face.

"From here you are ready to make a committed swing."

Mr Jacobs added that players need to keep their hands ahead of the clubface, right-handed golfers need to keep their weight on their left side and yardages need to be adjusted as a ball is likely to travel further.

Another occasion when a punch shot may be desirable is when a player is positioned behind a large tree and needs to hit a long distance without cannoning into overhanging branches.
