Stricker climbs to second in rankings after PGA Tour win

08/02/2010
- Golf Equipment
Steve Stricker has moved back into second spot in golf's world rankings after sealing a cautious victory in the Northern Trust Open.

The 42-year-old, who plays with a Titleist 909D3 golf driver, began the final round at the Riviera Country Club with a six-stroke advantage but seemed more content on playing it safe, rather than attempting to stretch the field further.

This allowed Luke Donald, in particular, to make some serious inroads into the advantage, but Stricker found some late birdies in the PGA Tour event and his one-under-par round of 70 allowed him to claim a two-stroke victory.

Alongside a fourth title in his last 15 starts, Stricker also leapfrogs Callaway golf clubs user Phil Mickelson to move behind Tiger Woods in the rankings.

Stricker said: "I just try to do what I'm good at and that's sometimes not the flashiest thing in the world. It may be grinding it out, making putts or getting it up-and-down, but it's my way, it's my style, I guess.

"We all know who the best player in the world is and I'll just continue to do what I do. That's practice hard and work at it to try to improve."

Stricker is also arguably the best player to have never won a golf major, with his best finish remaining his runner-up result in the 1998 PGA Championship.
