The volume and sharpness of grooves featuring on club faces are to be limited after new regulations were passed by the Royal & Ancient (R&A).
Following research in collaboration with the United States Golf Association (USGA), the R&A has come to the conclusion that the rule changes are necessary after new technology has made it too easy to play from the rough.
The restrictions will come into effect from 2010 in the professional game and 2014 in top amateur golf, the R&A confirmed.
"Our research has involved input from both governing bodies, including substantial laboratory work and player testing at all levels around the world," reassured research and testing director at the R&A, Stephen Otto.
Despite the fact that the news has reportedly been handed the seal of approval from the sport's main tournaments, players from outside the professional and top amateur ranks will not be under pressure to change their equipment until 2024.
