England were tied for 20th place after one round of the 2008 golf World Cup.
Cobra's Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher registered a 69 on day one at Mission Hills Golf Club in China, to leave them level with Guatemala, Thailand, Wales, Finland and China.
The German duo of Martin Kaymer and Alex Cejka held the lead after 18 holes, shooting an opening effort of 62 to go to ten-under par, one stroke ahead of Australia and two in front of Canada, the USA and Spain.
Kaymer, was thrilled at sinking a 75-foot putt for eagle on the seventh, calling it one of the longest he has ever made.
The 23-year-old told the Associated Press: "Of course you want to play well, but this is a team event and I think we should just enjoy this week. This is the last tournament for most of the players in the year."
Kaymer already has two European Tour titles to his name, having won both the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship and the BMW International Open in 2008.
