Seve Ballesteros is reported to be close to leaving the intensive care unit at a Madrid hospital after undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumour.

The Spanish golf legend has been recovering at the La Paz medical facility since being admitted last month - the 51-year-old collapsed at an airport after suffering from dizzy spells.

Ballesteros is said to be continually improving, according to the hospital, and it is hoped he will be able to make the move out of the intensive care unit soon.

His family released the following statement: "With the help of God, the neurosurgeons and their teams, and those who are keeping watch over his state of health at the intensive care unit, we trust with unquestioning faith Seve will come out successfully from this hardship."

Ballesteros is credited with having been one of the golfers who heightened the European Tour's global standing to compete with its rival operation stateside.

He is a five-time major winner, with a hat-trick of Open Championship victories.
