Jose Maria Olazabal has made a solid start to the Madrid Masters, his first tournament back from injury, shooting a one-under par 70 to finish three shots off the lead.
The 42-year-old Spaniard, who was deputy to skipper Nick Faldo at the recent Ryder Cup, declared himself happy with the performance, which comes after a lay-off with rheumatism problems.
The
MacGregor endorsee said post-round: "I hit a couple of shots into the trees but overall I'm happy with today's result.
"The back was bothering me a little bit at times because it was a cold morning but I had a good warm-up before starting.
Meanwhile, the lead was shared by England's Paul Broadhurst, Marcus Fraser of Australia and Sweden's Magnus Karlsson, in a group on four-under par.
Olazabal's countrymen were also up with the pace Miguel Angel Jimenez shot a 69 to end up on two-under par, while Pablo Larrazabal was one stroke back on three-under after carding a 68.
