Boo Weekley commanded a one shot lead after day one of the Stanford St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind, Tennessee.
The American demonstrated his impressive all-round game of big hitting and neat putting to go round in 65, taking him to five-under par, one ahead of Tommy Armour III.
Weekley, with two career PGA Tour wins under his belt, told the Associated Press that not making the cut at last week's Memorial tournament gave him added practice time: "I went around there and hit a lot of putts Saturday and Sunday.
"Being able to go and practice by yourself on a golf cart makes it a lot easier. You're not as tired, and you can work a little bit more out there."
Former World number one Vijay Singh was one shot back on three-under after an eventful round which contained two bogeys, a double bogey, five birdies and an eagle.
Sergio Garcia, David Love III and Stuart Appleby are all positioned in the group at two-under.
