US Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger paid tribute to the crowd-hyping tactics employed by Boo Weekley on the way to his team's 16 ½ to 11 ½ win at Valhalla yesterday (Sunday, September 21st).
The US reclaimed the trophy they last won at Brookline in 1999 after overpowering Europe in a scintillating series of singles matches, with home favourites JB Holmes and
TaylorMade's Kenny Perry, along with Weekley, all grabbing vital points in the middle matches.
Azinger highlighted the attention-grabbing antics of Weekley, who pretended to ride his driver like a horse on the way down the first fairway, much to the delight of the US home support.
"That's one of the greatest things I've ever seen in my life," Azinger said of the moment.
"There was a lot at stake for us. We had a little lead and for him to gallop off that first tee, I'm telling you, the whole place just cracked up and embraced that guy."
The US sealed their victory after Miguel Angel Jimenez missed his putt on the 17th in his match with Jim Furyk.
