Europe have the ability to nullify the US's home advantage, if they get on the right side of the American fans, according to one pundit.
Speaking to the Honolulu Advertiser, NBC golf expert Mark Rolfing remembered the scene at Detroit four years ago, when the American team trudged off after a morning's practice, leaving the Europeans to treat fans to a meet and greet after they had played into the afternoon.
Rolfing recalls: "There were 40,000 fans out there with no golf to watch other than the Europeans, who later hung around signing autographs.
"Colin Montgomerie was out there hugging babies and won over the fans. That thing took away the home-field advantage from the Americans."
The Europeans romped to an record 18 ½ to 9 ½ victory at Oakland Hills in 2004, with
Wilson Staff's Padraig Harrington beating Jay Haas in the final game.
