Phil Mickelson has played down suggestions that he has a leadership role as one of the most experienced members of the US Ryder Cup team.
The world number two has played in six Ryder Cups, more than any other player in the party, but has dismissed assertions that he must lead his team-mates.
Instead, the 38-year-old
Callaway Golf man is happy to relinquish all responsibility for directing the team to captain Paul Azinger.
He told USA Today: "My only responsibility is to play well. That's something I've been working on.
"(Azinger) has given us great direction. One of our biggest challenges is the uncertainty we'll face this week. He has done a great job of letting everybody know what to expect."
Mickelson has pointed to the US's form in the Presidents Cup as a reason to be optimistic over their 2008 Ryder Cup chances.
