British number one Lee Westwood says he regrets comments made about the US crowd in the aftermath of Europe's defeat to the US in the Ryder Cup at the weekend.
Westwood had admonished an abusive section of the US support, which he said had subjected him to "fairly nasty" and "pretty shameful" abuse.
But now the Nottinghamshire-born player, who finished third at this year's US Open, has come out and congratulated the US team on their performance, stressing that the badly-behaved spectators were only a minority.
He said in a statement: "A lot of what I said in Valhalla during and after the Ryder Cup didn't come out quite as I intended and finished up sounding like sour grapes.
"So let me say right now that I applaud America's victory, Paul Azinger's captaincy in general and the vast majority of the watching public who witnessed a titanic struggle between two very good sides."
Westwood was amused after being confronted by one fan in a ghost outfit who shouted 'boo!' - the infringing individual was later ejected from the Valhalla Golf Club.
