Anthony Michael was the surprise first-round leader of the Alfred Dunhill Championship after carding an impressive 66.
The little-known South African, who is a rookie on the Sunshine Tour, played solidly throughout his six-under-par effort at Leopard Creek.
A group of four players - Englishman Robert Rock, Germany's Sebastian Buhl, Marius Thorp of Norway and South Africa's Dawie van der Walt - are all tied for second on five under par.
Michael admitted that he was thrilled was his round, which contained seven birdies and just one bogey.
He said: "I struggled a bit today off the tees, I hit only three fairways, but from the rough to the greens was good and on the greens was amazing.
"I came in with a lot of confidence and I had a good feel out there. I find that I play pretty well under pressure. I'm not sure why, but I've always enjoyed the pressure."
The biggest name in the draw, Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, registered two double bogeys in a disappointing 76, while pre-tournament Charl Schwartzl fired a two-under-par 70.
Last year's Alfred Dunhill Championship was won by Spaniard Pablo Martin.
