An eight at the par-three eighth hole cost Padraig Harrington the chance to win a second successive USPGA Championship yesterday (August 16th).
The three-time major winner went into the final round four shots off the lead held by Tiger Woods, and two behind eventual winner Yang Yong-Eun.
Standing on the eighth tee, Harrington had moved to within a shot of the lead, but soon slipped out of contention with a quintuple bogey.
His tee shot found water, as did his ensuing chip, and the
Wilson Staff golf equipment player eventually finished in a tie for tenth place.
Harrington said his performance at the eighth was a particularly bitter pill to swallow considering how well he had hit his
Wilson Staff - Smooth Driver and
Wilson Staff Pi Golf Irons.
"Obviously it was a disappointment for me. I felt I hit the shots all day," he commented.
"I hardly got out of position at all bar the one hole. Another day, if a few putts had dropped, that would have been a nice number."
Harrington won the 2008 PGA Player of the Year award on the back of his USPGA success, while he also won the 2008 British Open at Royal Birkdale.
