Golf ball position "paramount" when putting

01/12/2009
Players should take extra care in the position of their golf ball within their stance before performing a shot with their golf putter if they want to witness improved results, it has been suggested.

Writing for the Plymouth Herald, golf professional Ian Marshall has revealed that many players may struggle to obtain their desired results due to having their ball either too far forward or too far back in their stance.

He said: "Placing the ball in the correct position for putting is absolutely paramount. The ball position should be approximately a third of the way back in your stance.

"This will enable the putter to strike the ball slightly on the up to create a nice top spin roll that will help hold the ball straight and true."

Mr Marshall added that players who have the ball at the front of their stance will often make a ball jump by hitting it on the up, while those placing it nearer their back foot will strike down on the ball too much.

Meanwhile, there are many other factors that may affect the end result when putting, including the grip a player has on their golf club, whether they keep their eye on the ball or not and the speed at which they hit their golf ball.
