Justin Rose has lost his European Tour card after failing to participate in the required number of tournaments this season.
The Englishman has only played three events, leaving him well short of the target of 12, and has a wrist injury which he does not want to aggravate in the final seven tournaments of the year.
However, Rose has been in discussions with Tour officials about his situation and is therefore unlikely to face the standard two-year ban on being reinstated.
"He started the year in a difficult position outside the world's top 50 and not qualified for the world championships or majors," said chief operating officer Keith Waters.
"It's been hard for him to get to 12 and having played only six to this point he didn't want to play six of the next seven weeks, not least because he's had a bit of a niggling wrist injury."
Waters confirmed that the 30-year-old tendered his resignation with a view to rejoining next season and playing the necessary 12 events to keep hold of his card.
Rose, who plays with a
TaylorMade Burner SuperFast driver, controversially failed to secure a wildcard pick for Colin Montgomerie's victorious Europe Ryder Cup team.
