Fairway Wood Buyers Guide - High Handicap
Fairway Wood Buyers Guide - High Handicap
Just like a driver, fairway woods have one of the longest shafts of any club in your bag so are still extremely tricky to use well with any kind of consistency. There are a few key points to look out for to ensure you get the most out of your new fairway wood.

Head size & material – As the complete opposite of drivers, it is not an advantage to have a very large clubhead on your fairway woods so most are still made from Stainless Steel. Titanium clubheads are available from some manufactures and these deliver extra distance.

Low Centre Of Gravity – You will be using your fairway wood to hit a ball straight off the fairway and out of the rough. Because you do not have the assistance of a tee you need as much help as possible to get the ball in the air. A club with a low centre of gravity let’s you get the ball airbourne, even from bad lies in the rough, and increases the distance the ball travels through the air. A clubhead with a smooth sole will also allow the club to slide effortlessly across the turf and inspires confidence at address. For the more mature and/or lady golfer senior and ladies flex shafts are also available.
