“Drive for show, putt for dough” is just one of the many phrases that is used to illustrate just how important putting is to your score. The putter is the one golf club that is used on every hole and remember that a 3 inch putt is worth exactly the same as a booming 300 yard drive!
Putters now come in a wide variety of shapes, colours and sizes and the overall decision is very personal no matter what your standard. Any golfer of any ability can use any putter they choose but the main areas to consider are detailed below.
Standard putters have a shaft length that measures 34-35 inches long. This will generally suit a golfer of standard height (5ft 10) but do not be afraid to practice and play around with models that have longer or shorter shafts until you find something that is the most comfortable. ‘Belly’ and ‘Long’ putters are also available which use much longer shafts to provide extra stability and therefore more accuracy.
The head design of putters has come a long way from the traditional ‘blade’ design. These classic shapes are still very popular but have now been joined by ‘mallet’ headed putters, which use a half moon shape and are usually face balanced to help you keep your putts going in the right direction. More radical shapes are also available, enabling the golfer to align the putter correctly for more holed putts.
A putter head is made from Stainless Steel which will give a firm feel as standard. If you require a softer feel then consider a putter with a face insert. Many golfers comment that a soft insert allows them to be more positive with their putting stroke and achieve a smoother roll on the greens.
You will use your putter at least four times more than your driver so do not be afraid to spend as much as your budget will allow!
