Wedge Buyer Guide - Mid Handicap
Want to break 80? Improve your short game, it is that simple! One of the key areas to concentrate on should be the loft ‘gapping’. Typically, there are approximately 4 degrees of loft between each of your irons but the gap between your pitching wedge and sand iron can be a huge 8 degrees! The perfect answer is the appropriately named ‘Gap’ wedge, which has a loft of 52 degrees. A gap wedge is the perfect club for approach shots, anything from 100 yards and closer. If you want to complete the full set and hit high, soft landing flop shots like Phil Mickelson then go for a lob wedge, with 60 degrees of loft, ideal for tricky greenside bunker shots and provide a fun way to make a ball go straight in the air with a full swing.
‘Bounce’ on a wedge is also crucial to way each wedge performs when it strikes the ground. Put simply, the less bounce a wedge has the more it will dig into the turf or sand. This may sound like a good idea but be very careful as it will also increase the likely hood of you hitting behind the ball and is therefore only recommended for the confident short game player. The standard bounce option will provide you with the perfect combination of playability and forgiveness so you can nip the ball off the turf whilst still performing well in a bunker.
If you fancy something a bit different then why not try a different finish? As well as the standard chrome appearance, black and oil can finishes are available which can be useful for reducing glare in sunlight and tend to ‘frame’ the white golf ball better at address, promoting extra confidence.
